Sleep Better: Find Out Whether You Have A Sleep Disorder

If you really think that you need to sleep better it is possible you could have a sleep disorder. There are many people who suffer from these disorders, but that go undiagnosed for months. Some of the symptoms could include feeling grumpy, having mood swings, or getting emotional easily. It could make it difficult to concentrate each day, and you might become more forgetful. If you want to know whether you could be suffering from a sleep disorder, then keep reading.

If you always think to yourself ‘I can’t fall asleep’ this could mean several things:

  • After you go to bed, you could find yourself waking up in the middle of the night,
  • You might not be able to fall asleep at all when you go to bed.

The first problem is known as sleep fragmentation: this means that you can usually fall asleep easily when you do go to bed, but you keep waking up in the night.

The second is known as sleep latency: this is when you can’t get to sleep at all, and can result from a  number of conditions including sleep onset insomnia, delayed sleep phase disorder, restless leg syndrome or even shift work.

What If I Sleep Too Much?

There are also sleep disorders that can cause people to sleep too much. Although these people may seemingly sleep better than others, they can have many of the same disruptive symptoms, or worse. Some conditions that can cause you to sleep too much include narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder, shift work or others.

If you find that it’s very hard to get up in the morning and that it can take an hour or longer to feel awake then you are finding it difficult to transition between being sleep and awake, and this is another type of sleep disorder.

Doing Things In Your Sleep

You might even do things in your sleep, such as sleep walking, or experiencing sleep terrors. These can happen sometimes, but if they happen often they could be the sign of a sleep disorder.  And sometimes, it may be your partner that could wake you up!
